Who we are

CUPE represents 30,000 workers in the City of Toronto. This is just a sampling of what we do every day for Torontonians:

CUPE Local 79

We watch your children at City-run daycares; we ensure licensed private daycares are safe.

We staff the phones at the 3-1-1 call centre, answering your questions, connecting you with services, and making sure other departments get your reports of potholes and broken pipes.

We help keep you employed, bringing new businesses to Toronto & keeping existing ones here. We administer the funding for almost 1,000 community arts and recreation groups.

We look after your elderly family members in the City’s 10 long-term care facilities. We provide dental services to those who can’t afford private care.

We staff drop-ins & shelters for those without homes. In extreme weather, we make sure there's space for people to stay safe. We provide employment support & income assistance.

We plan new areas of the city, like the waterfront, and make sure new buildings fit the community. When those buildings go up we make sure they're safe. We make sure every food preparation location in the city is safe for the public.

We are public health nurses, educating people about prenatal care and raising healthy babies, about avoiding tuberculosis and fostering nutrition, preventing sexually transmitted diseases, reducing the harm of tobacco and other drugs. We give vaccines and immunizations.

We keep civic centres, rec centres, police stations, daycares, Union Station and more clean.

We are lifeguards at City pools. We teach swimming, dancing, soccer, yoga, football, and so much more to young and old alike. We provide drop-in programs for new moms and seniors.

CUPE Local 416 - Toronto Civic Employees Union

We are the highly-trained first responders in the ambulances that answer your 9-1-1 call.

We run your local rink; we maintain Toronto's parks and public gardens.

We make sure your water is safe before it reaches your tap; we make sure your sewage is collected and treated after you flush.

We fix your roads, we plough the snow, we put down salt. We take care of the City’s trucks, cars and other equipment, so other City staff can always get where you need them.

We clean public buildings, clear the sidewalks, and cut the grass.

We come when you call about animals that have been hurt and killed, and take care of them.

We take away your garbage and collect your recycling.
